Black Background
A favourite among horse lovers, black background images are simple and elegant, with a focus on your horse with no distractions. Usually done in a barn doorway to create a natural light drop off, plus a bit of editing magic, black background images can be done at most yards, no matter the space you have available. Add garlands around your horse’s neck for some extra variety, or keep the images solely about your horse.
Fine Art
One of my personal favourite styles, fine art images are mostly done in post-production. Your horse will be positioned in a spot with optimal natural lighting, and a digital background will be applied in the editing stage. The digital background will be manipulated to compliment the tones of your horse and enhance their natural beauty.
Natural
Natural images involve minimal editing and are a representation of your horse in their natural environment. These images are taken around your horse’s home, usually in a field, around their stable, on any driveway, or any other picturesque spots, or spots that are meaningful to you and your horse.
Destination
Take your horse somewhere special - the beach, woodland, moorland, or anywhere that has great landscapes to compliment your horse. These images can often involve ridden pictures too, such as galloping (or trotting!) along the beach. The portrait session is unique to every horse and location, and we will work closely together to bring your vision to life.
FAQs
-
Each session includes shooting time for as long as your horse requires (typically 1–2 hours), professional editing of all images, a private online gallery for viewing and ordering of prints, and all images available for high-resolution digital download.
-
Unless choosing a photoshoot at a specific destination, all sessions will take place at your horse’s home.
-
This is up to you!
When the portrait session takes place at your horse’s home, you can choose between black background images, fine art style images, natural images, or a mix and match of the three types.
Where the portrait session takes place at a destination, e.g. at the beach, a forest, or in the moors, then the type of images will be dictated by the location.
In addition to the variety of image types, we can also create variety by changing your horse’s ‘dress’ through the session. This usually involves pictures in a bridle (a nice simple cavesson bridle often looks nice in the photos but their usual bridle could be more meaningful for you), a head collar (leather head collars usually look the smartest but their usual head collar can be used too, or a mix of both), and finally a photo-halter creates a ‘naked’ look due to the magic of editing.
We will discuss the images you want prior to the session to make sure you love every single image.
-
Yes, any horses belonging to the same owner can be included in the session for no extra charge. The same goes for including donkeys, dogs, or other pets in the pictures.
-
Please make sure your horse is clean. A good guide is to prepare them in the same way you would for a show. Plaiting is optional and down to your preference. If you want some images with your horse plaited and some without, then we can remove the plaits midway through the session for the best variation.
-
Horses will be horses, and that is why we love them! Every session is horse-led and we go at the pace that is best for your horse with plenty of breaks as and when required. Each set of photos is completed as efficiently as possible to avoid boredom for your horse.
-
Absolutely! We will discuss this prior to your portrait session, and you can change your mind at any point, too. Although most images I do tend to be horse-only, I actively encourage you to be in some of the photos as a keepsake for your own memories.
-
Wear clothing that complements your horse and the environment. Neutral, earthy tones often photograph best. Avoid loud patterns or logos unless it’s part of your brand or stable gear. Most importantly, wear clothes that you feel comfortable and confident in.
If you want photographs wearing a wedding dress, a prom dress, or similar, then please mention this when booking your portrait session, so we can plan your shoot to get the exact images you want.
-
